Mara Karu Hotel
Company description
See translation
Mara Karu Hotel is still in the project stage. In Kenya, beach tourism and safaris in the Masai Mara have become something of a cliché, albeit a charming one. It is no wonder that the Kenyan government is diversifying its tourism offer by venturing into hitherto neglected frontiers. Western Kenya, with its many untapped nature attractions, is one such frontier. The region’s endowments include Mt Elgon, which straddles the country’s border with Uganda. The mountain boasts a national park with abundant wildlife, bird and butterfly species, as well as some of the best hiking opportunities in the country. Other attractions close by include Saiwa Swamp National Park, Kagamega Forest – the last surviving equatorial forest in Kenya – and Lake Victoria. The reason for Western Kenya’s inability to take advantage of its nature attractions is that it has lagged behind the rest of the country in developing infrastructure, such as hotels. Bungoma County is a part of Western Kenya that is particularly affected by the lack of quality hotels. Mara Karu project aims to exploit this gap in the market by building a world-class resort in Bungoma County. The timing of the project is also propitious given the recent devolution of government from the central authority to the county level. This has seen counties attract investors who in the past would only have been drawn to large cities. The project’s feasibility study confirmed that Bungoma is now waking up to the need for hotels, as evidenced by the ongoing construction of a number of facilities. While the timing and location of Mara Karu make it viable, one feature makes the project particularly attractive: its site. Giant granite boulders, many of which look sculpted, occupy around 60 per cent of the 9.3 acres of the land on which the resort will be built. The boulders leave no one who has seen them indifferent. Indeed, everyone involved in the project is inspired, among other things, by the prospect of playing a role in transforming this site on a hill into a 21st century paradise. Urko Sanchez, the architect who has drawn the project’s architectural sketch is also very excited about the project because the fascinating terrain offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of his creative talent. An advocate of ecological preservation, Mr Sanchez has created architectural designs that will integrate the resort’s buildings into the boulders, while respecting nature as much as possible. Mara Karu provides the investor with an opportunity to be part of an exciting project in a country that is experiencing unprecedented growth the hospitality industry. We are exploring management arrangements through discussions with local and international operators with impeccable track records. Guest rooms: 55 These will have either two double beds or one queen bed, with workspace provided. A modern bathroom will be fully kitted out with all the necessary amenities deserving of a luxury product. Complimentary Kenyan coffee, tea and chocolates of the highest quality will also be provided, as well as cable TV and wireless. Five VIP cottages, (comparable to luxury suites), will be located at the top of the plot. A sitting room area, with a workspace, couch and TV will be part of the design. The sleeping area will have a king size bed, and the bathrooms will offer a Jacuzzi and shower, with all the amenities deserving of a luxury product. A fully equipped kitchenette with oven, microwave oven, refrigerator as well as pots and pans etc. will also form part of the cottage. A dining area with a full sized dining table will also be included. Wireless network and cable TV will also be available in the cottages. Six separate terraces, with six different buildings connected through walkways will house the hotel facilities. There will be one bar and one restaurant as well as a lounge serving coffee and snacks. Room service will also be available. For conferences there will be two conference rooms, seating 30–100 people. They will have conference calling, wireless Internet, elevated large LCD screen compatible with DVD, VHS, HDMI and VGI computer connections. A water dispenser will be provided as well. The rooms will have large windows with automatic shades. For leisure there will be a swimming pool, tennis courts, kids’ zone, and spa facilities. Two separate gyms will be provided; one for the VIP cottages only, linked to the spa, and one for the conference area, connected to the pool. Given the remote location, there will be 50 parking spots provided for international guests with rental cars and primarily “staycation”, Kenyan guests. The parking spots should also be used to accommodate the resort’s airport transfer shuttles and private cars to pick up guests.
