Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) is a Brazilian public higher education institution maintained by the federal government. It is based in the city of Recife, in the state of Pernambuco.[5] On August 11, 1946, the faculties of Law (founded in 1827), Medicine (1927) and Philosophy - Present FAFIRE - (1941) joined with the schools of Fine Arts (1932) and Engineering (1895) to form the University of Recife, one of the first university centers in the North and Northeast of Brazil[5]. In 2019, QS World University Rankings ranked UFPE as the best university in the North-Northeast, the 9th best Brazilian federal university, as well as the 13th best university in the country, ranking 41st among institutions in Latin America.[6] According to the Folha de S.Paulo University Ranking (RUF) of 2018, UFPE is the 10th best university in the country, being the best university in the North-Northeast, and the 7th best Brazilian federal university.
