Lake Kivu Overview: Hydragas is a climate solution and a clean energy provider, combatting a major problem in East Africa with immense potential climate and humanitarian impact. This problem could occur any time this century but can be turned around with impact, resulting in a strongly positive outcome. These benefits come from degassing a lake's high-risk, renewable methane resource, now at risk of eruption. The de-risking solution is a series of projects in Rwanda and the DRC, designed to capture carbon-negative biogases. The resource is a 400 bcm, deep deposit of dissolved gas in water in Lake Kivu, made up principally of 80% CO2 and 20% biomethane. Major positive outcomes of our intervention include prevention of a one-day eruption, with a 2 gigaton carbon emission from the lake. The emitted cloud can also lethally entrap 2-5 million people, due to the toxicity of 2000 ppm of H2S in the dense cloud. Arctic Basin Overview: Further projects concepts using the Hydragas IP are being developed for the Arctic Basin, to harvest problematic permafrost methane and prevent its emission to atmosphere. A secondary potential serious problem is methane, emitted from permafrost thaws, reacting with dissolved oxygen in the sea to produce CO2. The Arctic configuration can operate below the Arctic icecap at emission sites as a passive, year-round system with little chance of negative environmental impact. Solution: At capacity, upgraded gas supply can generate 600 MW for 50+ years, while distributing pipeline gas to millions of homes. Gas sales include natural gas and carbon dioxide feedstocks to industry. All energy revenue is local/regional, with no surplus for export. Revenues are projected at $50 B before C-offsets, with potentially growing 2-3x with offsets. Lake Kivu is a vast natural CCS that we convert for 50 years to a CCUS. We degas the methane to de-risk and prevent any eruption. The Hydragas IP produces 5x the gas output from Lake Kivu than the best alternative, available or operating, at this time. The solution is also the only one compliant with the "Management Prescriptions", the rules-of-use for lake Kivu development. Facilities: Our gas production facilities are designed to extract gas from the two main, deep resource zones of the lake below 260m depth. We install a group of ten submerged, spread-out, gas capture modules in Lake Kivu around a platform. Modules consist of up to 450m deep assembly of riser pipes, three stages of gas separation and clean-up, followed by a return line to depth. The 10-module gas extraction plants deliver 100 M m3/year of ~90% CH4 gas and up to 300 M m3/year of ~99% CO2 gas. Each Gas extraction facility links to shore by pipelines. Onshore, a gas distribution station links to gas users or networks. 50 MW gas-power plants feed power to grid. Our first project, a single-module demo plant with 5MW output tests “proof-of-performance”, verifying compliance to rules-of-use for the lake. Key Partners & Offtake Commitment: Hydragas Energy will own and operate the energy value chain from the lake source to bulk energy sales. Our clients are two national grids. Rwanda’s grid (REG-EUCL) has 60% of all homes connected, with 40% planned on mini-grids. SNEL has limited supply and connections in the Kivu Provinces, which need upgrades and strengthening to absorb the potential 300 MW of new supply. Power offtake agreements are regulated by national utilities REG or DRC’s SNEL. PPAs are on established terms, in US$, backed by MIGA or similar guarantees.
