Antik dönemlerden itibaren insan yerleşiminin olduğu bölge, M.Ö. 7. yüzyılda Kolkhisler tarafından kurulan Trebizond kenti ile bilinmektedir. Bu dönem, Trabzon'un stratejik konumunun faydalarını gördüğü bir dönemdir; çünkü Karadeniz’in önemli ticaret yollarından birinde yer almaktadır. Roma İmparatorluğu döneminde de önemli bir şehir olarak varlığını sürdüren Trabzon, daha sonra Byzantion dönemine geçiş yapmakla kalmaz, aynı zamanda 1204 yılında kurulan Trabzon İmparatorluğu ile eşsiz bir kültürel ve politik merkez haline gelir. Bu imparatorluk, pek çok sanatsal ve mimari eseri üretmiş, bu da şehrin kültürel yapısını zenginleştirmiştir. 1456 yılında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu tarafından fethedilmesiyle birlikte Trabzon, Osmanlı'nın en önemli şehirlerinden biri haline gelmiştir.
