The Harare Light Rail (Private) Limited Company is a Project sponsor specifically established for the development of the Harare Metro Rail (HMR) Project. This shall be a mass transport public commuter railway system that will provide a reliable, safe, affordable safety-net approach and environmentally friendly public transport. The Metro Rail project shall adopt resilient and sustainable alternative energy sources to power the trains. Phase 1 of the proposed Metro Rail system will have an overall length of 30.4km and 19 stations in an arc starting in the Harare CBD and sweeping through the southern industrial areas and the south west and western high-density suburbs where 80% of Harare's population resides majority low income earners. The annual ridership will start at 350,000 passengers per-day in phase 1 and growing to 1million passengers per day once all three phases are built. The Harare Metro Rail shall be designed to serve low-income areas targeting pro-growth, pro-poor and addressing gender-related disadvantages that are endemic in the current modes of transport being used. The HMR shall ensure a modern gender and children sensitive safety net approach and also cater for the special needs of the mobility-impaired.
